I own (and have indeed read, the two not always being the same) Semmes' ponderous 1,000+-page autobiography which dwells mostly upon the cruise of the Alabama. This book is a good counterpoint.
Amazing story of the Southern raiders, special built to tear up the Yankee merchants, but a hard life aboard.
Raphael Semmes was one of the great men of the Amaerican Civil War. In the Union navy he was not a great man--why?
